September 1st 2011 Brisbane's contribution to a worldwide protest against the slaughter and captive sale of small marine mammals, carried out in the coastal fishing villages of Japan. Taiji is the most well know, after "The Cove" documentary won an oscar in 2009.
Taji aside from slaughtering the dolphins for meat also spares the lives of some for sale into the captive marine mammal industry.
The 1st of September marks the start day of the drive fisheries hunts which will runs until the following March for the smaller species and April for the larger species targeted.
Each season quotas are issues for the following species; Bottlenose dolphins, Striped dolphins, Pantropical Spotted dolphins, Pacific White Sided dolphins, Risso dolphins, False Killer whales and Short Finned Pilot whales.
